On the McMullen farm the mine was opened in 1882, when fifty carloads of silicate of zinc were shipped to St. Zinc blende, disseminated with some flint and siliceous lime-rock and very little galena, mark the deposit. On the Berry farm a shaft eighty feet deep was made in 1885, with a drift sixteen feet in length. The formation throughout the district is lower Silurian, the rocks of the calciferous period being well defined. The old Berry Diggings, on Section 1, Township 28, Range 16, four miles north of Mansfield - eighty acres of the Baker farm and forty of the Berry farm - formed part of the lands, while two miles east were 290 acres of the McMullen farm and one and one-half miles southeast, on Section 20, Township 28, Range 15, 120 acres of the Headly lands formed the balance of the mining property. The Ozark Mining Company, originally Higgins & Co., was incorporated in May, 1885. In October, 1878, a vein of lead fourteen inches thick was discovered at the Ash Grove Mines. Lead ore was also found at several points to the southeast of Lead Hill. The Lead Hill Zinc Mines, on Section 25, Township 28, Range 16, near Mansfield, were opened on the hill-side near the railroad, and by 1885 a tunnel penetrated the hill about 100 feet, while six shafts, averaging fifty feet in depth, were used in 1885. Berry, the owner of the land, gave much attention to mineralogy, and aided in developing the deposit here. Zinc and Lead Ores - The Berry Diggings (zinc mines on southeast quarter Section 1, Township 28, Range 16), in Pleasant Valley Township, were operated in 1884-85 by S.C. The dividing ridge, or the highest part of the State south of the Missouri River, extends through the county, and is a broad table land, possessing numerous undulations, which give the county its rolling appearance, and numerous valleys and ravines, which render it more or less broken. Besides the local undulations of this vast plateau, some portions of it are higher than the others as widened by the course of the stream.

It is known by those who are at all versed in the physical geography of the State, that its surface may be described as a broad, undulating plateau, from which project a series of hills, and into which the branches, creeks and rivers have worn their deep, broad channels and valleys. Its northern boundary is located exactly at 37° 3' north latitude, and the court-house is located nearly at 15° 30' longitude, west from Washington. Wright County, Mo., lies wholly within that belt of country called Southwest Missouri.
